e number and size of the large estates and in the fifth century BC Attica was farmed mainly by small landowners. While there was never enough wheat and barley to feed the whole population, ancient Greece was the main exporter of oil and wine in the Medit
erranean. The most widely cultivated fruit was probably the fig. Vegetables were generally considered a luxury and did not form part of the diet of the poorest members of the population.\par
